Leveraging CHT capabilities to support inventory management - a community story presented by Muso Mali team

The MUSO Mali team working with stakeholders have adopted and reused the CHT stock monitoring workflows which were developed by the Medic team. The goal of deploying this use case is to help streamline how CHWs, supervisors and stock managers handle inventory in the field and improve supply chain responsiveness.

The team has implemented a multi-level hierarchy with three key user roles: stock managers and ASC supervisors, who manage and distribute stock and ASCs (CHWs), who dispense stock. Using the flexible stock monitoring module, they have created forms for diverse medical inputs and benefited from features like clear stock visibility, accurate dispensing records and streamlined supervisor communication via needs_signoff. While the workflows were effective, the system faced limitations such as syncing strain (supervisors getting a lot of requests), challenges in updating forms, the CHT version (3.15.0) that the team was using then had a document cap of 50 at the level of contact summary. To address these issues, the team adopted a top-down stock flow, introduced daily stock reviews, reduced sync loads and simplified workflows by removing the inventory review step. The team also recently upgraded to CHT v4.x to take advantage of the contact summary reports calculation fix.

In our May 2025 Round-up live demo, @Gilbert was able to showcase how the inventory workflows support Stock Managers and CHW Supervisors to distribute stock and adjust stock thus helping supervisors to track movements in real-time and detect issues early. This presentation also highlighted how daily stock review forms and configurable logic help users to avoid missing key steps in the workflows. The team has also designed contact summary visual cues that inform Supervisors and CHWs of their stock levels. Overall, the pilot has shown strong potential and this has been a result of iterative user-centered design process that has been key to its early success. Thank you Gilbert and the MUSO team for the insightful presentation, you can watch this presentation here.
