Using tech + data to advance gender equality

Hi everyone – it’s great to join the community!

I’m the director of Ladysmith, a feminist research consultancy that helps international organizations collect, analyze and take action on gender data.

We recently published a Facebook-commissioned report that some of you may be interested in, called Building Alliances for Gender Equality: How the Tech Community Can Strengthen the Gender Data Ecosystem. The report identifies areas across the SDGs where tech companies could contribute through privacy-preserved data sharing and dedication of their other resources to solving problems related to gender equality.

Last-mile health was one of the areas we focused on. As tech companies like Facebook are thinking about where to invest to achieve the SDGs, we pointed to areas where more data is needed, like travel time to the nearest active health facility, that have distinct impacts on things like maternal mortality, women’s time use/unpaid care burden, and job quality for community health workers. We feature a number of the CHT members, including Pivot, Village Reach, and Medic Mobile. Here’s the link to the report: Report: Building Alliances for Gender Equality – Ladysmith

I’m really interested in how Ladysmith might get involved in projects related to gender, data, and community health. If you have ideas to share, or would like to touch base with researchers who focus on gender and development, feel free to reach out!

Warmly,
Tara
